Under Maryland law, each vehicle owner is required to purchase auto insurance coverage or at least minimum protections in case the vehicle is involved in an accident.
Also required under state law, there are two types of liability coverage that each vehicle owner is required to purchase. One is coverage for property damage liability and the other is coverage for bodily injury liability. The state also imposed minimum amount for liability, namely: $20,000 for individual bodily injury, $40,000 for total bodily injury in each accident, and $15,000 for damage to property. The amounts meant for bodily injury liability are for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and for payment to lawyers in the event of lawsuit. On the other hand, the amount for property damage coverage is for damage to vehicle and property not belonging to the policyholder.
As stated, the amounts specified above are only the minimum limit and car owners wishing for higher coverage can go right ahead and purchase higher limits of coverage. There are also other coverage available for purchase and are meant to add protection for the policyholder and family members included in the policy. These coverage include liability for uninsured or underinsured motorist, personal liability protection, collision coverage, and comprehensive coverage, among others.
There are also coverage for renting vehicles and other transportation expenses while the insured person’s car is still under repair, coverage for towing, and one that pays for repairs after the car suffers a mechanical breakdown. To fully explore the type of coverage needed for the whole household, potential policyholders are advised to shop around and may solicit advice from those who have already experiences dealing with certain insurance providers.
The state also requires insurance companies to process claims and settlements in timely, fair, and nondiscriminatory manner, in order to insure consumer protection. To this end, any complaints regarding auto insurance policies may be addressed in writing to the Maryland Insurance Department for proper attention and resolution.
